Week 17 of 2018 Super Rugby Season: Cell C Sharks v Emirates Lions Game Review

It’s a game of two halves last night as the Sharks host the Lions at Jonsson Kings Park in Durban, South Africa.

Both teams played well throughout the 80 minutes, but one of them will have the upper hand.

Who will win?

Is it the Black & White at home or the Red & White away from Johannesburg.

Let’s find out.

1st Half

Armand Van Der Merwe quickly takes a straight line-out throw to form a maul for the Sharks.

On the other hand, the Lions didn’t have the defensive strength to stay square & force a collapse.

That allowed the Sharks to push the maul forward as Jean-Luc Du Preez kept the ball in play & touched one down for the five points.

The Lions fight back in the 8th minute.

The opposing team did a great job spreading out wide where Ruan Combrinck easily comes home on the right-hand side.

Quick ball with the assist by Franco Mostert to call Elton Janjtes for some back up before completed his magic with Combrinck.

Not only Janjtes contributed well with the Lions’ attack.

But, the Lions No. 10 Fly-Half added a successful kick over the posts for another two points.

Lions have scored two out of two tries in the 17th minute.

Janjtes contributed a focal point in the Lions’ attack once again to Harold Vorster.

Then Ruan Combrinck made a quick ball to Cyle Brink who smashes a couple of Sharks dummies past the TRY line.

Look at his power, not the pace where Brink scares off Makazole Mapimpi & Cameron Wright on the way home.

Once again, another successful kick from a different angle from Elton Janjtes with the two extra points.

Lions make it home for TRY Number Three before the break.

They tried to go out right towards the right-hand side as the Sharks built a wall with the defense.

Though, this time they go out left where Malcolm Marx sprints out a bit with the help of Ross Cronje & Elton Janjtes.

The Sharks defense tried to ground Marx.

But it’s too little, too late as Marx threw a quick finish to Kwagga Smith who sails one home for a TRY.

And Elton Janjtes successfully kicks between the sticks from a tricky left side angle.

HALF-TIME: Sharks 11-21 Lions

2nd Half

The Sharks made up for lost time when they built a solid attack before Andre Esterhuizen struck one home on the left-hand side.

The referee wanted to know if he put a foot into touch & Esterhuizen touched one down just inside the TRY line which is enough for the Sharks to claim five points.

Robert Du Preez gets his kick nicely into the goal as the Sharks trail Lions by three points, 21-24 with 20 minutes to go.

The Sharks gets the upper hand to win at home against the Lions.

The Lions tried to build on their attack to maintain their lead.

Thought someone from the Lions could help Cronje & Janjtes complete the job for them.

But with no one on the right-hand side, Lwazi Mvovo stole the show with the 60-meter dash on the run home that delights the Black & White crowd at Jonsson Kings Park.

And Robert Du Preez completes the Sharks win at home against the Lions with another successful kick, 31-24.

What’s next?

The Sharks will travel to Western Cape as DHL Stormers host the Black & White at Newlands next Saturday at 1.15 AM AEST.

On the other hand, Lions will have next weekend off before facing their final regular-season match v Bulls in two Saturdays time.
