2018-19 Domain Tests: Day 3 of 2nd Test Morning Session Review, Australia v Sri Lanka in Canberra

Dhananjaya De Silva and Kusal Perera resumed work in the middle having remained steady for Sri Lanka.

Though, Jhye Richardson pitched up a scorching bouncer that heavily tagged the side of Perera’s helmet.

Perera went back up okay.

But Perera didn’t feel well as he retired hurt on 29* before Dimuth Karunaratne returned in the middle on 46*.

It didn’t take that long for Karunaratne to secure his half-ton here at Manuka Oval.

D. Karunaratne held his bat up on his 22nd 50 in Test Cricket having stayed simple with his shot selection via an open bat face.

Dhananjaya De Silva thought that he escaped the short ball play before his bat touched the stumps on 25.

Mitchell Starc did a great job throwing that straight spicy bouncer & make De Silva play under pressure from the stumps.

For De Silva, he took his eyes off the ball has swung and missed in which helped him struggle to control his crease.

Not long later, Starc added another spicy ball that pitched up wide and straight before Karunaratne reached out for the shot.

D. Karunaratne could’ve left it had reached out for the shot & lost its shape when the ball went straight to Kurtis Patterson at gully.

Australia soon got rid of another Karunaratne when Nathan Lyon dismissed Chamika on a four-ball duck.

It’s a full ball turning in before C.Karunaratne defended without the focus on his eyes as it scooped to Mitchell Starc at slip.

A few minutes before lunch, Marnus Labuschagne trapped Niroshan Dickwella on his front pad having dismissed him on 25 via LBW.

Sri Lanka’s Take

Sri Lanka’s batting went okay having kept the technique simple and fired off with the open bat face.

D. Karunaratne & Dickwella knew how to build a foundation from singles to go aggressive with the shots anywhere down the ground.

The only negatives seen by the Sri Lankans is the poor handling of the short ball.

De Silva couldn’t be patient enough thought that he escaped the short ball, then his lack of head focus saw him hit wicket.

The same went to D. Karunaratne who didn’t move his feet to help navigate the full ball away.

Back to Dickwella, although, he scored some quickfire runs along the way as soon as he roped in.

But, his attempted sweep went too early with his grounded head position affected his wicket when the ball hit the front pad.

And on the defense, C. Karunaratne should keep the head still so he can block the ball with a straight bat.

He only let it touch the edge or splice parts of the bat before pinging straight to the fielder’s hands.

Hammer the basics by keep playing the open bat face and wait a little longer for the ball to provide maximum power downtown.

Australia’s Performance

The bowling may have fired off slow and steady.

But during the middle to late portions of this session, Australia found a way with the wickets in hand.

Mitchell Starc’s scorching short ball play made it tough for De Silva to retain his wicket under pressure.

And there it goes when De Silva swung and missed before his bat touched the stumps.

Plus Starc became flexible to make D.Karunaratne play the drive far from the ball.

With the pace continue to play a part, Starc is on a roll by taking two scalps this morning here in Canberra.

Though, the spinners have done their hard work for most of the time.

Nathan Lyon put the revs on full and straight in the middle which is attacking way to make C.Karunaratne scoop the defense straight to Usman Khawaja.

So did Marnus Labuschagne when he pitched the same approach as Lyon’s to make Dickwella make a mistake with the sweep.

With that said, Labuschagne secured his 1st Test Wicket here in Australia.

Dilruwan Perera remained on ten not out with Kasun Rajitha waiting in the wings after lunch.

Australia will need either D.Perera or Rajitha and Vishwa Fernando out to complete the 2nd Innings play.

Kusal Perera may not be back due to a concussion test that he got hit by a Jhye Richardson bouncer earlier in the morning.
