It was mostly a quiet Saturday of the first of the two doubleheader weekend at Pocono Raceway.
Thankfully, the rain didn’t hurt us too much this time around, having spent the first nine laps under yellow with the safety car before we raced under the green flag.
Aric Alrimola did lead the first half of the opening stage before he pitted before the competition caution for strategic reasons.
From there, Joey Logano took the lead from the next restart & carried on towards the start of stage 2 with the opening mini win.
Again, nothing major happening on the race track during most of Stage 2 with another wave of pit stop cycles.
But thanks to the two late cautions in the lead up for Stage 3, it did shift a change of strategy when some drivers who ran up front at the time chose to stop before Almirola won Stage 2.
Almirola did carry top spot during the first half of Stage 3 and despite no yellow flag hiccups along the way.
It’s a slow last stop of the day that cost Almirola both the race lead and the win.
Instead, it’s Kevin Harvick, who had a great last half of Stage 3 on the run home.
Having overtaken Almirola on the pit road exit with 31 to go, it became the winning move that saw him at last win for the first time at Pocono.
All in all, I enjoyed a quiet Saturday afternoon race to see with thrills on the race track and spills with mistakes via the wall & on pit road.
Regarding the race where I’m tuning in, it’s Sunday morning back in Sydney, Australia, for me.
One doubleheader now ticked off, I can’t wait for the late Sunday afternoon running before we cap off June on a high note.
