2020 Suncorp Super Netball, Round 14: Magpies v Firebirds Game Debrief

It’s a tight opening quarter with the Queensland Firebirds have the early lead by one point, 19-18.

The Firebirds are communicating well with the youngster, Tippah Dwan, partnering experienced goal shooter, Romelda Aiken upfront.

The Magpies also did well thanks to the front three defense led by Geva Mentor, Jodi-Ann Ward & Madi Bragg.

But it’s the Magpies’ conversions will need to take over the Firebirds lead if they will cut the discipline.

This time, the Magpies have turned themselves around in the attack that left the opposition defense exposed.

A lack of support from the Firebirds’ half with the lack of communication via the conversions plus gaps & square begs at the back saw them fall behind by two points, 33-35.

Gabi Simpson, Kim Jenner & Tara Hinchcliffe needed to match an experienced and mobile Magpies back three later.

But the game isn’t over yet going into the last two-quarters of this match.

The Magpies continued to be unstoppable both in the attack and defense.

It helped them extend their lead while the Firebirds scored goals too to close the Magpies by four points going into the final quarter.

The Firebirds’ attack counts on their defenders to match the Magpies standard alone, which will define the conclusion.

In the end, the Firebirds attack eventually answered their defensive support call with the successful conversions needed to hold off for the close win by two points, 65-63 at Nissan Arena in Brisbane.
