I have covered some part of Nine’s proposed commentary mix up last week.
We see some names popping up to lead their rugby union coverage. Not only it will just be on Nine but also on Stan Sport.
I can guarantee you that one person will not go anywhere is Matthew Burke. He is currently under contract with Network 10.
They need him every weekday to present the sports news in Sydney. It will be a big ask unless Nine pays him out.
I know Gordon Bray is a contractor and does not appear on Ten as often. Scott MacKinnon I think is tied up with this network like Matthew Burke.
But Nine will not take the risk & hire some of them from Ten. They will rather develop the commentary themselves.
And It will turn into a unique way of seeing fresh faces with expert opinion.
Drew Mitchell is a great example. He may be recently retired. Drew can draw up his experience with club & country in the 2000s & early 2010s.
I am sure Stephen Hoiles carries the same traits with Drew. And he will no doubt be welcome at Channel 9/Stan Sport.
We also hear from the hosting side with James Bracey. He did host the 2011 Rugby World Cup before on Fox Sports.
And James currently hosts lots of programs:
- State of Origin.
- Sports Sunday.
- 100% Footy.
- Australian Open Tennis.
But Nine may go with Nick McArdle if they do not want to add his workload.
Now they turned their attention on potentially hiring Sonny Bill Williams.
I see this as an interesting and most valuable hire if this happens.
Sonny just came off a illustrious career in both rugby league and union. It is still possible that he would not mind playing for more.
But he would go into commentary if Sonny unable to secure a new club.
The library reference is there to see how does the current crop play their rugby. He can link & tell what it is like playing with Beauden Barrett & Sam Cane.
Not only Sonny can draw back with his union expertise with the All Blacks. And the other Super Rugby clubs he played with and against.
Another notable coach he can refer to is Dave Rennie. His former boss at the Chiefs & now a Wallabies head coach.
He can be an excellent league contributor having started his playing career there.
Then he came back again for a short time with the Roosters in 2013-14. And he committed to league for a third spell after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
I do not know much about rugby league here. Sorry to be biased because I am mainly into rugby union.
But Sonny won two NRL premierships before. First in 2004 with the Bulldogs & 2013 with the Sydney Roosters.
He has been very athletic for his entire life. And Sonny has the perfect physical build to succeed in any sport.
He can even be a boxing analyst if Nine can get these rights in the future.
Overall, I would say bring that paycheque and hire SBW.
He would fare better than the ones right now from Fox Sports & Network 10.
