John Millman gave Team Australia the upper hand. After he defeated Michail Pervolarakis in the 1st singles game. But Alex De Minaur unable to get past Stefanos Tsitspas 3-6, 4-7 in the 2nd.
In which leads an all-important decider in the 3rd & final game via doubles. As Australia & Greece lead the pie 1-1. When John Peers/Luke Saville take on Michail Pervolarakis/Stefanos Tsitspas. Whoever wins still keep their semis berth alive.
Greece got ahead of Australia up a bit initially. But lost their way v Saville/Peers not long later. And unable to find some sweet spot that would hold his opponents back. Where Saville/Peers pulled away from Greece. Before extending the Stage 1 lead before they take the 1st set on 6-3.
But Greece fought back without a fight than before in Stage 2. They fired off better with the momentum needed to stay in the game. Having led 3-1 against Saville/Peers by the halfway mark. The Aussies may have begun to catch up.
Where the consistency is not there from Saville/Peers. Just hitting the momentum at the wrong time. With not much lost time needed to compensate. When Greece denied them a straight sets win option. As Pervolarakis/Tsitspas gave themselves a reprieve going into a tiebreaker. Greece won the second stage set 6-4. In the hope of winning this three-match series 2-1.
Unfortunately for Greece things did not end up their way. Australia become refreshed from the Stage 2 loss. Where they fired off with the early lead against Greece 3-1. Pervolarakis/Tsitspas showed some courage to see themselves in the race. But Peers/Saville able to execute the middle ground needed to win this match.
Australia defeated Greece in the doubles 6-3, 4-6 & 10-5 in tiebreaker. As well as the overall series win 2-1 out of the best of three. They are leading Group B in the ATP Cup ahead of Spain & Greece. With one loss v Spain from Tuesday & one win last night. Their possible semis berth remains pending when Spain v Greece tonight.
Their only hope is Greece making an upset v the Spaniards. As Spain has a very great lineup. That team performed outstanding 3-0 v Australia from two days ago. Even without their main man Rafa Nadal. Although Rafa did most of the leadership vocals for his teammates. Well Rafa could make a return tonight. As long as he can overcome that lower back pain.
While Greece needs to perform something special. Maybe a 3-0 whitewash v Spain would upsurge not only their opponent for tonight. But also Australia from last night if they are win a semis berth. It is not at all possible. Just a tougher route given here to defy all odds. As we are moving to Day 3 of 6 in the 2021 ATP Cup competition.
