Tennis News, Canada advances into the ATP Cup final tomorrow after a brilliant rebound from Denis Shapovalov & Felix-Auger Alliasime in the doubles v Russia

by

What a comeback from Canada in the 2nd semi-finals of the 2022 ATP Cup against Russia at Ken Rosewall Arena where they fired off well with the early lead 1-0 before losing the 2nd singles tie at 1-1, but Canada fought back during the doubles decider 2-1 as they will now meet Spain for tomorrow’s final.

Great work from Denis Shapovalov who launched the opening set during the 1st singles tie v Roman Safiullin, now he may lost the 2nd set after the break but he never gave up along the way having been on the same page as Safiullin & managed to pull off towards the finish line first.

Score: 6-4 to Shapovalov, 5-7 to Safiullin & 6-4 to Shapovalov

Then we go into the 2nd singles tie with World No.2 Daniil Medvedev too good for Felix Auger-Alliasime in straight sets 4-6, 0-6, it’s tough to see Felix who lost his cool after a competitive first set battle but him partnering Denis v Safiulin & Medvedev in the doubles has to be the most competitive deciding match of the day that went down the wire for the 2nd & last remaining final spot.

Although Medvedev and Safiullin have the early lead in the opening set, it’s Shapovalov and Auger-Alliasime who not only worked their way from a set down that led towards a deciding tiebreak but they maintained that renewed momentum right until the very end & beaten Medvedev & Safiullin to the punch that made Team Canada run wild into the tennis court.

Score: 4-6 to Medveved & Safiullin, 7-5 & 10-7 to Shapovalov & Auger-Alliasime

Tomorrow’s final will commence at 5.30pm as both teams are chasing for that one and only ATP Cup trophy with Roberto Bautista Agut v Auger-Alliasime, then Pablo Carreno Busta v Shapovalov and if scores goes 1-1, we’ll see Shapovalov & Auger-Alliasime teaming up once again this time against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina & Pedro Martinez.
